I thought I’d start this Blog with a simple little poem I came across when I was in High School.

I have been passionate about leadership and taking some form of it since grade school, but really stepped into the forefront and limelight at the age of 15 when I was put in a leadership role that impacted over 120 student Army JROTC cadets at Robert. E. Lee High School. At 16, I was directly responsible for 50 cadets – including teaching them first aid, drills, physical training, map reading, leadership and inspiring them to do well in their classes. I was single-handedly the “teacher” of my Company like each of the other four “commanders” in the Battalion. I also commanded a “drill team” that performed on a competitive basis.

I probably didn’t realise how invaluable those life skills in leadership, authenticity, gaining the respect of others, and Leading By Example would be to my success.

So a little food for thought for you as you join me on this exploration of Leadership.

I’D RATHER WATCH A WINNER

I’d rather watch a winner, than hear one any day,
I’d rather have him walk with me, than merely show the way.

The eye’s a better pupil, more willing than the ear,
Fine counsel is confusing but example’s always clear.

The best of all the coaches, are the ones who live their creeds,
For to see the good in action is what everybody needs.

I can soon learn how to do it, if you show me how it’s done,
I can watch your hands in action, but your tongue too fast may run.

The lectures you deliver may be very wise and true,
But I’d rather get my lessons by observing what you do.

For I may misunderstand you, and the high advice you give,
But there is no misunderstanding how you act and how you live,

Yes, I’d rather watch a winner, than hear one any day,
I’d rather watch a leader, modeling the way.
